A rescue boat on the water
Langebaan has a dedicated rescue service on the lagoon, and we subscribe to it for every lesson we run. If the kite goes down or you end up further out than you meant to, the boat comes to you. You are never swimming back to the beach.
Two-way radio helmets
Your instructor talks to you through a radio in your helmet while you are on the water. You get the correction at the moment you need it, instead of being shouted at from the beach — which is why people progress faster here than they expect to.
IKO Pro Centre standards
We follow the International Kiteboarding Organization curriculum, and your progression is logged on an IKO card recognised at schools worldwide.
All equipment included
Kite, board, bar, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest are all part of the price, at every level. Bring a swimming costume, sunscreen and a towel.
Why Langebaan
Flat water, reliable wind, and a lagoon that looks after you
The Langebaan lagoon is a 16 km stretch of protected water inside the Langebaan Lagoon Marine Protected Area. Because it is a lagoon rather than open coast, there is no shore break, no reef, no swell to fight and no boat traffic in the riding area — just flat water and a sheltered, contained space to ride in.
That flat water is why the spot works for everybody. If you are learning, it is a forgiving surface to get things wrong on. If you already ride, it is about as clean as freestyle and big air water gets, with room for downwinders when you want distance instead.
The wind is the other half of it. From October to Easter the south-easter fills in most afternoons with a consistency you rarely get anywhere else, which is why Langebaan has been a fixture on the international kitesurfing circuit for decades — and why you can plan a trip around it.

The school
A small school, built around one idea
Obsession Kiting was founded in 2017 by Megan and Shannon du Plessis. Megan taught kitesurfing from 2012 and took several hundred people from never having held a kite to riding independently; Shannon came from Hobie cat sailing and the business side. They now run the school, and it is built around the idea they started with: get people riding safely and independently, not dependent on an instructor forever.
We are an IKO Pro Centre, which means we run instructor training as well as lessons, and we are audited against the IKO curriculum. In practice it means the person teaching you has been trained and reassessed properly, and that the card you leave with is recognised at schools around the world.
