Kitesurfing in Langebaan: your questions answered

Where is Obsession Kiting based?

We are at 52 Main Street, Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa, on the Langebaan lagoon about 120 km north of Cape Town. Lessons run from the main teaching beach a short distance away.

What is the best time of year to kitesurf in Langebaan?

The season runs from 1 October to just after Easter weekend. December and January give the strongest and most consistent wind but are the busiest; February and March offer excellent wind, warmer water and thinner crowds; October and November are quieter with reliable wind and cooler water. The wind is an afternoon pattern — mornings are usually glassy.

How many hours does it take to learn to kitesurf?

Most people need 8 to 12 hours to ride independently. Our Zero to Hero course is 10 hours over 4 to 5 days for R10 500. Allow at least a week in Langebaan for a ten-hour course, so a windless day does not cost you the end of your progression.

How much do kitesurfing lessons cost in Langebaan?

At Obsession Kiting: the Zero to Hero course (10 hours, private) is R10 500; the Taster course (6 hours, private) is R6 600; group lessons are R625 per hour per person with a maximum of two students per kite; and specialised one-on-one coaching is R1 150 per hour. All prices include equipment, rescue boat and radio helmets.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. You need to be a competent swimmer and comfortable in open water. You will wear an impact vest and there is a rescue boat on the water for every lesson, but swimming ability is a requirement.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

No. Kite, board, bar, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest are all included in the lesson price. Bring a swimming costume, a towel, sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap.

Is Langebaan good for beginners, or only for experienced riders?

Both, which is unusual. The lagoon is flat and protected — no shore break, no reef, no swell and no boat traffic in the riding area — so it is forgiving to learn on, and the rescue boat and radio helmets mean a beginner is never far from help.

That same flat water is what brings experienced riders back: it is about as good as freestyle and big air conditions get, the wind is consistent enough to plan a trip around, and there is room to run downwinders. It is genuinely rare to find a spot that suits a first lesson and a season of hard riding equally well.

What is an IKO Pro Centre?

The International Kiteboarding Organization is the largest kiteboarding training body in the world. A Pro Centre is a school authorised to run instructor training as well as lessons, and audited against the IKO curriculum. For you it means your instructor has been formally trained and reassessed, and the progression card you leave with is recognised at IKO schools internationally.

What happens if there is no wind on my booked day?

We do not charge you for a lesson that does not happen. We reschedule within your stay wherever possible, which is why we recommend building a spare day or two into your trip. On flat days we also run boat wakeboarding, and we keep a guide to what else is on in Langebaan.

Can I rent equipment without taking a lesson?

Yes, if you are already an independent rider — able to ride upwind and turn without falling. A short on-water evaluation with one of our instructors comes first. Full kite kit starts at R1 250 for under three hours and R1 700 for a day, and a rescue pass is included with every kite or wing rental.

Can my friend and I share a group lesson?

Yes, provided you are within about 10 kg of each other. In a group lesson the pair shares one kite, and the correct kite size is determined by rider weight — if there is a big gap between you, the kite is wrong for one of you and both of you learn more slowly.

If the weight difference is too large we will tell you upfront and suggest private lessons instead, or pair each of you with someone closer in weight where we can. It is worth mentioning both weights when you enquire so we can plan it properly.

Should I learn to kitesurf or to wing foil?

Wing foiling has a gentler start — there are no lines or safety systems to manage, and you will usually be riding the board within your first session. Getting up on the foil then takes several sessions. Kitesurfing takes longer to start but has a bigger ceiling for jumping and freestyle. Winging also works in lighter wind. If you are unsure, tell us your goals and we will give you a straight recommendation.

How far is Langebaan from Cape Town?

About 120 km, roughly an hour and a half by car up the R27 West Coast Road. From Cape Town International Airport allow about an hour and forty-five minutes. Most visitors hire a car — Langebaan is spread out and public transport is limited.

Can I book from overseas before I arrive?

Yes, and for December and January we strongly recommend it. Send your dates through the enquiry form or on WhatsApp and we will hold a slot. Exact session times are confirmed a day or two ahead, once the wind forecast is clear.

Do you teach children?

We do teach younger riders, but suitability depends on the individual — weight, swimming ability, confidence and the conditions on the day all matter more than age alone. Get in touch with your child's age, weight and any board sport experience and we will tell you honestly whether it is a good idea.

Can I learn to become a kitesurfing instructor with you?

Yes. As an IKO Pro Centre we run the full instructor pathway: the Assistant Training Course (5 days), a First Aid course (8 hours) and the Instructor Training Course (5 days). Outstanding candidates are sometimes offered work with us afterwards. See our instructor training page for details.
