Kitesurfing lessons in Langebaan
Private and small-group tuition on the flat, protected water of the Langebaan lagoon. Rescue boat, radio helmets and all equipment included in every price below.
What learning to kitesurf here actually looks like
Kitesurfing is not one skill, it is four, learned in order. Almost everyone who struggles has skipped one. Here is the sequence we teach, and roughly where you will be at each point.
Kite control on land
No trainer kite. You start on the beach with the real thing, flown on short lines — the same kite you will ride, with the power taken out of it. That way you learn the wind window, how to steer and how to park it while the kite still behaves exactly as it will on the water.
Control first, power second. Every safety system gets drilled here until releasing is automatic. Roughly the first hour.
Water relaunch and body dragging
Into the lagoon without a board. You learn to relaunch a kite that has landed on the water, to body drag downwind, and then the important one: body dragging upwind to recover a lost board. This is the skill that makes you independent. Hours two to four.
The waterstart
Board on your feet, kite through the power stroke, and up. This is the part everyone pictures and it is the part that takes the most attempts. Flat water makes each reset quick, and the rescue boat means a bad one never costs you the rest of the session. Hours four to seven.
Riding, then riding upwind
Once you can get up, the goal becomes staying up and going where you intend. Riding upwind is what turns kitesurfing from an exhausting walk of shame into an actual sport. This is where the Zero to Hero course finishes. Hours seven to ten.
An honest note about timing
Anyone who promises you will be riding in a fixed number of hours is guessing. Wind strength on the day, your board sport background and your weight all move the number. What we can promise is that we will tell you where you actually are, and not sell you hours you do not need.

What every lesson includes
The same safety cover on every session, whatever you book.
A rescue boat on the water
Langebaan has a dedicated rescue service on the lagoon, and we subscribe to it for every lesson we run. If the kite goes down or you end up further out than you meant to, the boat comes to you. You are never swimming back to the beach.
Two-way radio helmets
Your instructor talks to you through a radio in your helmet while you are on the water. You get the correction at the moment you need it, instead of being shouted at from the beach — which is why people progress faster here than they expect to.
IKO Pro Centre standards
We follow the International Kiteboarding Organization curriculum, and your progression is logged on an IKO card recognised at schools worldwide.
All equipment included
Kite, board, bar, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest are all part of the price, at every level. Bring a swimming costume, sunscreen and a towel.

Rescue boat
This is what “rescue boat” actually means
The lagoon has a dedicated rescue service, and we subscribe to it for every lesson we run. In this shot the boat is shadowing one rider while a second is picked up out of the water. Nobody is swimming a kite back to the beach, and nobody is losing an hour of their lesson to a bad crash.
Riding independently? You can buy a rescue pass through us too — it is included free with every kite or wing rental.
Kitesurfing lesson questions
How many days does it take to learn to kitesurf?
Most people need between 8 and 12 hours of tuition to get riding independently. Our Zero to Hero course is built around that: 10 hours spread over 4 to 5 days. Spreading it out matters — the wind is an afternoon thing here, and your body needs the overnight gap to consolidate what it learnt.
If you only have two days, the 6-hour Taster Course will get you flying the kite confidently, body dragging and doing a self-rescue. You will not be riding yet, but you will have a real foundation to build on.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes. You should be comfortable in open water and able to swim without assistance. You will be wearing a buoyancy-assisting impact vest and there is a rescue boat on the water, but you must be a competent swimmer.
Do I need to be fit or strong?
Not especially. The kite pulls against your harness, which sits on your hips, not your arms — this is not an upper-body sport. General fitness helps with the walking and the waterstart attempts, but plenty of people learn in their fifties and sixties.
What should I bring to a lesson?
A swimming costume, a towel, high-SPF sunscreen and a water bottle. Sunglasses with a retainer strap and a rash vest are useful. Everything else — kite, board, bar, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest — is included in the lesson price.
Can I book a lesson from overseas before I arrive?
Yes, and for the peak December to January period we strongly recommend it. Send us your dates through the enquiry form or on WhatsApp and we will hold a slot. Because the wind dictates the timetable, we confirm the actual session times a day or two ahead once we can see the forecast.
