Wing foiling lessons in Langebaan

The sport that has taken over the lagoon in the last five years. Less wind needed, less gear to manage, and a shorter path to gliding than most people expect.

Why so many people are switching to winging

A wing is a handheld inflatable sail. There are no lines, no bar and no safety systems to manage — if it all goes wrong, you let go and the wing floats next to you. That single fact removes most of what makes learning to kitesurf intimidating.

The foil under the board is what makes it addictive. Once you are up on the foil the board leaves the water entirely and the ride goes almost silent. It also works in lighter wind than kitesurfing does, which in practice means more days on the water during your stay.

How the learning curve compares to kitesurfing

Winging splits into two separate skills, and they are learned in sequence.

Wing handling and board riding

Flying the wing on land, then kneeling and standing on a large, stable board and riding along without the foil doing anything. Most people manage this within their first two-hour session.

Getting up on the foil

Learning to pump the board and manage the pitch as the foil starts to lift. This is the part that takes time — expect several sessions of short flights before they join up into a proper ride.

A rough rule from what we see: people get to riding the board quicker than they would get to riding a kiteboard, and to flying the foil in a comparable amount of time. If you already kitesurf, the wind theory transfers and you will move faster.

Already kitesurf?

Then you can usually skip most of the theory. A single private session is often enough to get you riding the board and starting to touch the foil. Tell us your kitesurfing level when you enquire and we will pitch it right.

What every lesson includes

The same safety cover on every session, whatever you book.

A rescue boat on the water

Langebaan has a dedicated rescue service on the lagoon, and we subscribe to it for every lesson we run. If the kite goes down or you end up further out than you meant to, the boat comes to you. You are never swimming back to the beach.

Two-way radio helmets

Your instructor talks to you through a radio in your helmet while you are on the water. You get the correction at the moment you need it, instead of being shouted at from the beach — which is why people progress faster here than they expect to.

IKO Pro Centre standards

We follow the International Kiteboarding Organization curriculum, and your progression is logged on an IKO card recognised at schools worldwide.

All equipment included

Kite, board, bar, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest are all part of the price, at every level. Bring a swimming costume, sunscreen and a towel.

Where winging goes once you can fly

Riding the board comes quickly. Getting up on the foil takes a few sessions. After that the sport opens up fast — carving turns, riding swell, and eventually jumping, which is far gentler on a wing than on a kite because there are no lines to manage in the air.

Langebaan's flat water is a good place to progress through all of it. There is no chop to unsettle the foil and nothing to hit.

Renting a wing setup

Once you can ride independently we rent full wing kits, and foil-only or wing-only setups if you are travelling with part of your own gear. A rescue pass is included with every kite or wing rental.

Full wing kit starts at R1 600 for under three hours and R2 800 for a full day, with better rates the longer you take it.
